Pico de Orizaba Necessary gear
Transport: All ground transport from airport, México or Puebla Cities to Pico de Orizaba, or just 4×4 if you prefer to get to the mountain on your own.

From the very beginning they were very helpful and friendly. I climbed with Mesh, who was wonderful–very fun to talk to, lots of expertise, very patient. All the guides seem to genuinely like each other, creating a nice atmosphere. The drivers should also be mentioned, as they are very good at driving bad 4×4 roads. In summary, I can’t recommend them enough. You won’t regret signing up for them.

It was great fun to be standing on the summits of those two mountains, which I climbed solo with my guides from 3summits, Daniel and Essau. The views of the valley of Puebla and the surrounding volcanoes (especially Popocatepetl) are absolutely stunning and unparallelled.
I had been looking for a realistic challenge for a 57 year old who wants to get back in shape and see Mexico from a different angle than the Riviera Maya. Well, I couldn’t ask for more! I got a chance to visit Mexico City, Teotihuacan and Puebla while I was there. And of course, I topped it off with a week of resting at the beach in Playa del Carmen. Life is short !!
From the moment I started inquiring about climbs in Puebla, Alvaro was very helpful to get me quickly on my adventure and set the proper logistics for the climbs with Karla. All I had to do was keep training and bring my personal clothes. They took care of the ground transportation, tent, sleeping bag, helmet, crampons, harness and food at the base camps and on the mountains and quickly answered any questions I had. The goal was to have me acclimatize properly and climb as lightweight as possible, because those mountains are absolute beasts when you live at sea level like me. In the case of base camp at Itzaccihuatl, I would suggest that you ask for your tent to be set in a remote area, as there is a little climber traffic which affected my pre-climb resting and slowed me down somewhat. Aside from that, these people are pros at what they do and provide all the basic comfort you need to enjoy the astounding sceneries awaiting you in beautiful Puebla!

From the start to the end, this was a great experience! I did the 3 day Pico de Orizaba climb and in every step of was clear that the staff was knowledgeable, compassionate, and taking every step possible to ensure you have a safe, successful, and beautiful summit day. The staff who do the two acclimatization hikes with me communicated my pace with my guide in order for them to determine a summitting pace, and my guide Mesh very expertly set the perfect pace to see an amazing sunrise. All logistics like food and water are taken care of, and I had some delicious meals courtesy of Lupita and the staff at the base camp. Mesh also carefully took the time to explain mountaineering techniques and do gear checks, which was a very informative experience. I strongly recommend 3summits!

The transport to and from Puebla all went smoothly and I was provided with plentiful tasty food at the camp which had a nice relaxed atmosphere. Cristian was a great guide, very experienced and competent with 200+ assents of the mountain under his belt so you knew you were in safe hands. It was also great being able to hire a lot of clothing and equipment as it allowed me to undertake the climb as part of wider travels where warm weather clothing hasn’t been otherwise necessary. I’d definitely recommend using 3 Summits if you’re thinking of taking on the challenge!

She has a deep knowledge of the mountain’s place in human history from both before and through the Age of Exploration, as well as knowledge of the unique plant life that thrives in this high alpine zone in the tropical. She was also an enthusiastic and skilled photographer of our adventure.

She made sure we had an excellent experience and soaked up all the natural beauty even though we didn’t reach the summit.

I also got to pick at the biology knowledge of Guide Raul. Loved the smile from Chef Patty! It was easy to book and I communicated my training program and mountain experience. They were able to recommend a few more endurance cardio workouts to my training that would help get me ready. Overall, my climb went great. I would drink more electrolytes next time. Only adjustment I would make to basecamp is to have an actual wash station so our dirty hands are for sure cleansed before touching any food. There was hand sanitizer but I feel like a water bucket and soap would be even better. Just a small improvement. Otherwise, Pico is a perfect intro to mountaineering with 3Summits. Reasonable program schedule and cost. Good food, gear, and friendly staff who were always hyped for everyone!

They both kept me safe on the mountains and could go as fast or as slow as you needed. I was first to summit on both mountains, both just before sunrise. Alvaro and Karla handled all the logistics through WhatsApp and from the moment they picked me up from my hotel in Puebla everything was taken care of.

I reached out to 3 Summits in November 2024 to plan a trip for December 2024. My schedule is very tight and I didn’t have a week to spend, but really wanted to climb Pico De Orizaba. I asked 3 Summits about planning an accelerated 3 day trip for me, and they were able to cater to my schedule and needs. I flew in on day 1 and took a bus to Puebla same day. 3 Summits guide and driver picked me up at bus station and we stayed at Malinche Cabins the first night and summited the next morning early. Transported to Pico base camp that afternoon, and started summit push for Pico the following morning. Flew out the next day. Through out the entire trip, 3 Summits was amazing. Even before I arrived in Mexico, there were regularly checking in to ensure trip was still a go. The communication and pick up at the bus station were second to none. At no point was I ever concerned about them picking me up or getting us where we needed to be. My guide, Angel, was a stud, and his experience and knowledge was impressive and I always felt safe and taken care of. It was a fast trip, but great. I wouldn’t recommend the quick manner in which we tackled the mountains for others, but it was all the time I had and my fitness was strong. I can’t recommend 3 Summits enough. They were a true pleasure from start to finish.

Took a fast ascent – afternoon arrival, evening ascent at pico orizaba. Mesh was my guide and he was spectacular. I had altitude sickness before even reaching base camp but still chose to continue the journey. Mesh was there to give me guidance on my health each step of the way and helped me go at my own pace. We reached the glacier and felt like we raced up at the end. The last 200 or so meters we were in complete white out snow and ice. We emerged at the summit and enjoyed the victory and a great lunch. The experience was as much spiritual as it was physical. I wish every one to experience the greatness of this mountain. My dad hiked this 40 years ago as a 20 something and I had the honor to follow in his foot steps. Mesh and 3 summits are trust worthy, reliable, kind and most importantly skilled. Highly recommend. I hope to see this crew of incredible mountaineers again. Truly a gift.

Before the trip, Karla and Alvaro answered all of our questions and booked all of our accomodations before landing in Mexico. Alvaro, the owner of the business, is super knowledgable and was willing to work around my groups busy schedule for multiple video calls to answer questions and troubleshoot prior to the trip. Once we landed in Mexico, we were greeted by the coolest group of dudes. For La Minche, Alejandro and Danny were great! They made us awesome food and got us to the top with the perritos just as planned. Two days later, Gilgamesh and Paco guided us to the top of Pico de Orizaba in record time. I will definitely be recomending this outfit to anyone who is interested in a somewhat exotic trip to the third highest peak in North America!

The Climb
To reach the summit, a perfectly shaped crater 300 m depth (985 ft) and between 410-480 m wide on tope (1345-1575 ft), you will have to climb the 700 m (2300 ft) Jamapa glacier with permanent snows. Just below the glacier, as an entrance to the magnificence of the mountain, the labyrinth will challenge all your orientation skills.
The climb usually begins between 12 and 2 am therefore, you have to know your way around to get through the labyrinth.
By sunrise average climbers are usually at the end of the labyrinth or already on the glacier.
The climb can be divided into two major sections: Before the glacier and during the glacier both lasting approximately the same time.
To take into consideration
To summit Pico de Orizaba you must be in a good physical condition and your body acclimatization process must be properly carried out.
According to your experience, your acclimatization, your time, etc. we will suggest the best itinerary for you to maximize your summit options.

About our climbing team
Our guides have succesfuly guided in mexico mountains hundreds of times. Of course when not working we like going to other countries to challenge ourselves both in mountaineering and rock climbing, we have experience in South America, Europe, Asia and Africa.
In addition, our guides have the following international backing in knowledge and practices in high mountains:
- Training in Mountaineering and Mountain Rescue techniques taught by instructors from the AGMP (Mountain Guides Association of Peru and Ecuador) belonging to and with UIAGM standards (International Union of Mountain Guides Associations).
- International First Aid Certification in remote places given by ECSI (Emergency Care & Safty Institute). WFR/WFA
- We all speak English and Spanish. Some even Fench
In Mexico there is no official mountain guides certifications, so we do our best to catch up with international standards.
